Samsung Galaxy M51 Review: Good battery, beautiful screen

Samsung Galaxy M51 Review

While you’ll undoubtedly be looking at the Samsung Galaxy M51 because of its massive 7000mAh battery, the phone has a lot of other things to offer. The phone has enough performance, and battery, under the hood to sustain extended gaming sessions, and has the camera pedigree to satisfy camera nerds as well. If everything goes well in our full review of the Samsung Galaxy M51, it looks like Samsung has a solid mid-range contender with their new phone.

Design of Samsung Galaxy M51

So far, we’ve seen 5000 mAh battery phones have had design trouble because of their thick body. That is an annoying thing when we use smartphones.

But for Samsung Galaxy M51 that problem has been solved, although it carries a 7000 mAh battery but its thickness is only equivalent to the S20s only. However, when it comes to the weight, it’s only finished with a fake glass plastic, it still weighs 213 g. Thus, with a thickness of 9.5 mm of this same weight, having a 7,000 mAh battery is acceptable in a 2020 smartphone.

In addition to the breakthrough thickness and weight, most of the design of this M51 is a typical Samsung in 2020. It is a curved back, flat edges and rounded corners. Color selection seems a bit monotonous when you only have 2 color options: Celestial Black, Electric Blue.

The front is a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen. The really large screen combined with the extremely thin edges for the screen experience is great.

The hole-punch screen does not control the corner of the screen, but the center seems a bit strange compared to other screens. Although the hole is not as small as the Flagship, but it is also not well-engineered to not affect the screen experience much. Edge contact between the screen and the mainframe is a fairly short speaker strip and easy to see.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy M51 is equipped with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD + (2400 x 1080) resolution. However, this screen is protected by only one Corning gorilla glass 3. While the phone now has a new 7th generation piece of glass, Corning calls Victus.

Another unfortunate thing is that the refresh rate of the Galaxy M51 screen is only at 60Hz by default. This still leaves me feeling regretful because Samsung is often better than other brands in screen quality but now it still lags in refresh rates.

Compare a bit with the Realme 6 or Realme 7 which has a 90Hz refresh rate. Or a Xiaomi product is POCO X2 with a speed of 120 Hz. Furthermore, their price is on par with this M51. If you experience the reality you will see that even though its chipset is Snapdragon 730G, the smoothness of the game is not comparable to the 90Hz screen with the same chipset.

Although talking about such weaknesses, its visibility is still very good with the “Super AMOLED plus” panel. It’s still the Diamond PenTil but is a thinner panel with better viewing angles. Of course, the contrast of the AMOLED screen is almost infinity. Natural color reproduction corrected for sRGB and DCI-P3 thanks to automatic color management.

Software

Samsung Galaxy M51 runs Android 10 with One UI 2.1 Core. With this software version you will get many new features like built-in screen recording and a full Pro camera mode. In return you won’t get Samsung Pay and features like folder security.

Even when the software is updated, these features cannot be obtained since the M series phones do not have Knox certification. So it will not be very secure for your applications, of course system security is still very good as long as you are a little careful.

Samsung’s new One UI 2.1 Core is now much more complete and provides you with a smooth experience without any hiccups. The system-wide dark theme and blue light filter are very popular because using your phone in a dark space is easier without blinding.

Another cool feature in this new One UI version is smart pop-up notifications. Whenever you receive a notification from the app it will appear as a messenger bubble. You can click on it and it will display a floating window just like the messenger. However, the size and opacity of this floating window can be adjusted.
